A community that does not pay attention to the youth and their needs dies very quickly - "... emiti emito, gy’egiggumiza ekibira...".
In December of year 2004, Ggwangamujje NY/NJ inaugurated a Scholarship Fund and Youth Related Program which is an extension of the Luganda School to cater for youth related activities.
In addition, the youth program is responsible for granting educational scholarships to individuals who have excelled in cultural based events such as Luganda essay competitions. In 2005, Ggwangamujje NY/NJ celebrated its 10 year anniversary and also awarded three winners of a written essay competition a US $500.00 scholarship each.
Ggwangamujje NY/NJ’s youth program also encourages the youth to visit their motherland in order to assist them to grow up as useful citizens. This activity, also known as a pilgrimage or “okulamaga”, enables them to become familiar with their country of origin. In addition, it also helps them think of ways in which they could contribute in helping to uplift the standards of disadvantaged people in Uganda. When in Uganda, they tour various places in Buganda and ask any questions they may have.
Other activities in the program include: internships, summer jobs, excursions to various places, networking etc...
There is still a lot we can do for the youth. We intend to expand the program as funds get available. As such, any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
